Giovedì 15 ottobre / 18.00 Video Games and the Fight Against Anarcho-Capitalism
Lecture di James Cartlidge (independent researcher). Modera: IVIPRO. [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: Dystopian games love anarcho-capitalism: Bioshock’s Rapture, the hyper-corporatised cities of Deus Ex, Cyberpunk 2077, The Outer Worlds, lesser-known gems like Quasimorph and Cruelty Squad. Governments irrelevant, corporations unchecked. Crypto firms, tech billionaires, and prominent politicians all flirt with anarcho-capitalist ideas that are reshaping our world. Video games have uniquely contributed to resisting this ideology by making anarcho-capitalism playable, exposing its contradictions. [Link YouTube e Twitch]
Sabato 17 ottobre / 18.00 When a Nightmare Becomes Reality: America’s Crusade on Iran
Lecture di Kas Ghobadi (game dev). Modera: Giulia Martino (FinalRound). [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: “Operation Epic Fury” began on Feb. 28 with America’s opening silo: the simultaneous assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei and 168 schoolgirls at Minab. This blow set off a cascading chain reaction. The hegemony of the globe-spanning Anglo-Empire is meeting its demise in the Persian Gulf. Do artists in the West play a serious or significant role in all this? What is to be done? [Link YouTube e Twitch]
Modera: Claudio Cugliandro (Deeplay). [IN INGLESE]

This talk brings together game studies and gender studies to analyze how digital games create and structure the identity of the gamer-subject in social, material, and historical ways. Drawing on cases from the Brazilian scene, we discuss how gender, race, and class are reproduced in virtual identities through the avatarization of the ego, sustaining structural violence. 14.30 Local Roots, Global Voices: Translating Regional Identity in Video Games
Conversazione con Stefano Buffoli e Tiziana Ferrera (Loki) [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: Localizing games with strong territorial and cultural ties requires more than direct translation. This panel explores how deeply rooted cultural narratives face unique hurdles when reaching global audiences. By fostering early collaboration between developers and localizers, creative teams can address sensitive content, navigate cultural nuances, and protect narrative authenticity from early production, turning potential localization pitfalls into seamless cross-cultural storytelling.
15.30 When the Game Works and the Place Doesn’t: Games User Research for Cultural Heritage
Lecture di Pietro Guardini (StopGuessing.it) [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: A game can work exactly as designed and still misunderstand the place it shows. Games User Research – the systematic study of what players do, understand, and experience while change is still possible – investigates why. From shrine destruction in Assassin’s Creed Shadows to game-driven tourism in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, this talk offers five questions for teams working with real places at any scale, from early concept to the moment a game begins reshaping the territory after release.
16.15 From Cultural Asset to Playable IP: Licensing, Partnerships and Sustainable Growth
Lecture di Michelle Perez Barruos (MPB Licensing) [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: Cultural heritage, iconic characters and territorial identities are increasingly entering games and interactive platforms, yet many projects remain one-off activations. Drawing on more than twenty years in gaming, licensing and strategic partnerships, Michelle Perez Barruos explores how cultural assets can become playable IP through the right creative fit, rights structure and partnership model, balancing authenticity, audience engagement and sustainable long-term value across global markets.
17.00 Gaming for Impact: A Personal Journey
Lecture di Francesco Cavallari (Video Games Without Borders) [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Well, life has been kind to me: I enjoyed creating games since I was a kid and all my career has been as a game developer! After 15 years at Ubisoft, I got a totally unexpected chocolate out of the box and I founded Video Games Without Borders, the nonprofit organization developing digital games for social impact that I still run today. This is my personal journey… and it’s not over yet.
17.45 35 Years, 12 Games, Zero Plans that Held
Lecture di Maciej Miąsik (game designer and producer) [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: Why do game projects almost always miss their deadlines? Drawing on three decades of production — and a record where only four of twelve projects shipped on time — this talk argues the problem isn’t the estimation formula but the missing data behind it. Game work is part repeatable, part irreducibly uncertain. The remedy isn’t tighter plans but coarse milestones, ranges instead of single dates, and re-planning at every step. You can’t tame the unknown, but you can learn to navigate it.

10.30 Creating Games in a Bomb Shelter: Personal Experiences, Bitsy, and Games as Art
Lecture di Dariia Selishcheva (game designer) [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: How can a video game become a form of witnessing? Starting from the creation of What’s Up in a Kharkiv Bomb Shelter, this talk explores how personal experience can be transformed into interactive storytelling using accessible tools such as Bitsy. It also looks at games as an artistic medium open to everyone – not only professional game developers – and introduces several independent projects created in Ukraine during the war.
11.15 The Berlin Apartment: History Through the Lens of Stories
Lecture di Hans Böhme (Blue Backpack) [IN INGLESE]

This presentation explores the game’s approach to this apparent dichotomy, the developmental challenges the team faced, and the unique power of video games to foster a culture of remembrance.
12.00 Make Games Live Forever: Video Games as Europe’s Fragile Heritage
Conversazione con Piotr Gnyp (GOG) [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: Video games are among the most influential cultural artefacts of our time — and among the most fragile. Servers close, formats rot, source code goes missing. In this interview, Piotr Gnyp (GOG, EFGAMP board) argues for treating games as cultural heritage worth saving, and shows how preservation really works: the legal, technical and commercial puzzles of bringing a classic back, GOG’s DRM-free model, and the European push to keep our digital memory playable.
13.00 Pausa pranzo
14.30 When is Interpretation More Meaningful than Actual Events?
Lecture di Jack King-Spooner (Talha and Jack Co.) [IN INGLESE]
ABSTRACT: This talk explores how meaning is constructed through memory, storytelling, mythmaking and personal perspective. Drawing on examples from art, games, folklore and everyday life, it examines how interpretations can outlast, reshape and even eclipse the events that inspired them. By embracing ambiguity and subjectivity, we can consider how narratives become the reality through which we understand the world.

Conversazione con Ugo Biggeri (Global Alliance for Banking on Values), Andrea Montuschi (Indici Opponibili) e Anna Laura Orrico (Movimento 5 Stelle)

ABSTRACT: Ricostruire il passato significa anche interpretarlo.
